Supervised Independent Living Program (SIL)

OVERVIEW:

SIL offers psychological, educational, vocational, and financial support. Counseling is directed toward developing parenting skills, improving self-esteem and cultivating interpersonal relationships. SIL services are offered to dependant and/or delinquent youth including adolescents and their babies who are in need of community placement.

 

LIFE SKILLS

OVERVIEW

The Life skills program for SIL participants (and for children in foster care from ages 14 to 21) is a component designed to support the needs of older adolescents placement in SIL by preparing them with the life skills and tools needed to live independently.

LIFE SKILLS FEATURES

  • Useful information- Cooking tips and interesting things to learn
  • Community Resources- Access to counseling, free health care, etc
  • Socialization activities- Parties, programs and travel, etc
  • Complimentary items - Gift certificates, cookware, etc

There are six areas of focus:

  • Self Sufficiency : Help clients obtain a job as well as suitable living quarters
  • Knowledge and skills : Prepares clients to be self sufficient. Provides academic or vocational training
  • Social or Interpersonal Supports : Concentrates on citizenship as well as community involvement
  • High Risk Behaviors : Educates clients about unsafe behaviors as well as illegal activity
  • Physical and Mental Health : Ensures that each client has access to adequate health care
  • Self Perceptions and Personal Characteristics : Helps clients establish aspirations for the future as well as "a strong healthy identity"

 

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • All CSI SIL clients must participate in the life skills program
  • All participants must commit to attending at least two one-hour sessions per month
  • All participants must be punctual and prepared to learn

 

REASONS FOR ENROLLMENT IN SIL

  • Clients will become educated in ways to locate and contact resources on their own
  • Clients will learn and develop skills in money management, food preparation, and job readiness
  • Clients will learn how to function independently and to obtain resources outside the child and adult welfare systems
